Mavis Bank In a colonial setting among magnificent gardens is Mavis Bank, originally called Ormond and built between 1862 and 1874. The land was bought in 1849 by James Cleary, who was a friend and protector of the aboriginals and the first vegetable and dairy farmer in the Maryborough area.

In 1859 his brother Daniel, wife Bridget and their four children arrived from Tipperrary, Ireland, to live in Maryborough. On their arrival, James divided his land in two and Daniel's half was called Ormond. Daniel Cleary died in 1862, followed by James death in 1872, aged 78 years. Joseph drowned in 1877.

The Clearys lived at the home until the Catholic Church became its owner in 1879.

In 1902 it was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Reid, but unfortunately, Mr. Reid died that year and the house was sold to Eliza Jane Smith, whose family owned it until 1981.

Mavis Bank still retains its colonial feel. It is furnished as a comfortable family home with antiques and collectables from 1720-1920 and is truly a step back in time. Mavis Bank was one of five houses to receive a heritage tourism award for the Centenary of Federation.

Entry fee is $6.00. Groups and buses are welcome! The home is open everyday from 1pm - 4pm.
